Lifehacker, tips and downloads for getting things done
This is mainly for things other than the CR-48 but I would test it on one if I had one. I broke it so if someone else could test it that would be great.

I have the thirst for knowledge. Don't try to stop be or I might become your nightmare.
I attempted this using the Cr-48. I used gedit to create the file, then I saved it to my Dropbox folder under the name "manifest.json." I saved to Dropbox a png file for the site I wanted to bookmark and renamed it "128.png." I then switched to the Cr-48 and downloaded the file. But I was unable to succeed. Whenever I tried to load the extension, I got a pop-up warning telling me, "Could not load extension from /home/chronos/user/Downloads/manifest.json'. Manifest file is either missing or unreadable."
It's quite possible that I messed something up, so I'm interested in hearing whether anyone else with a Cr-48 got this to work.
Even better: Use Appmator. You can easily create shortcuts to Web apps with it, no manual creation of a manifest.json needed.
That's pretty neat. But it's not worth $5 to me.

Well it's not as bad as $25 for the Android Market, is it? I had $95 worth of disposable money in the bank at the time I paid the fee, and $95 > $5.
You shouldn't need to pay anything really. Hypothetically if you create the .crx file and post it in Dropbox or something similar then you should be able to download it and install it.

Yeah, installing from Dropbox or Ubuntu One is another option, you're right, and if you don't want to pay the $5 to start developing it is a good fallback method.
What I really want to see is more packaged apps in the market, those with the entire app (including the Web pages/Javascript files) packaged into the .crx file so it installs locally. There are already a handful of them in the Web Store, but more of these could help to make Chrome OS less Web-dependent and more suitable to run offline.
I'm practicing creating themes before I decide whether I want to become a Developer or not. It would make syncing the ones I make much easier. And 5 dollars really isn't that bad.

To make theme creation more user-friendly (as user-friendly as Appmator):

It's what I used to create my Illuminated Leaves and Yucca themes.
