As the name implies, Large Document is a tool for sending large files. Yes I know there are lots and lots of web tools doing the same, why should I bother to try this one? What sets Large Document apart from its rivals?

There are always times when I need to pass files to my colleagues and friends. While for most of the time this means only a few clicks in popular web mails like Gmail and Yahoo! Mail, large files are blocked due to file size limits set by these service providers. I have to turn to various file transfer web sites to instead.

While these file transfer web sites have been very helpful, they usually comes with the following problems:
  • (Annoying) Advertisement
  • User account required
  • File size and number limits
  • Uneasy use

Large Document brings a totally different experience to users.

Firstly, it displays no advertisements on the page. None. I wonder how they support this service but for now it’s totally free of ads. The screen is a pure black, there’s nothing except the necessary buttons and instructions to distract your mind from the file sending task.

The second thing I like is that I don’t need to create an account before using it. I think this means not only saving a couple of minutes on user registration but also avoiding (possible) spam mails.

Thirdly, the file size limit is a generous 2 GB (or 8GB for uploading using a 64-bit machine). I don’t understand what is it all about 64-bit machine, but 2GB is good enough for me. Besides, I can choose more than one files to upload simultaneously. No hassle of selecting individual files in each dialog box or zipping files before upload. Just click and go.

What really impressed me is the convenience of using it. Once I started uploading the file(s), a link is generated for me to tell my friends (by copying the link to clipboard or opening my default email client with the link in a new email’s content). There is no need to wait for the completion of file upload before I get the link. Of course, if my friend opens the link before the file completely rests on the server, Large Document will ask my friend to wait. The file is stored on the server for 90 days so there is no hurry to download.

Large Document is available in Chrome web store as a web app, an Android app in Marketplace and Gmail gadget.

Large Document is in beta release. I’m not sure if it will remain free or ad-free in the future, but currently it is surely a convenient tool that worth trying.
