This article at ReadWriteWeb by Sarah Perez, Google's New OS Will Offer Remote Desktop Capabilities, talks about "chromoting" and suggests that the current Chrome OS will be for lightweight netbooks only and that a full desktop Chrome OS may come in the future.

Personally I use logmein.com and while it doesn't offer the same experience as Firefox or Internet Explorer due to the lacking plugin, it does work.

logmein is excellent, as was Hamachi before it. Unfortunately, there's no linux version so chromeos won't jive with remoting to a linux server. This would be an excellent feature to have.

Oh you mean to remote into the CR-48. I use logmein to remote into my windows machines when I need to.

I'm not sure why people seem to want to remote in to the CR-48.

I want to be able to use an installed program (mathematica) on a linux server that I have access to. Ideally I'd like to be able to view the desktop environment through a webpage (like logmein allows you to do) so I can work visually with an installed program.

I imagine that in the near future, before everyone gets on board with the cloud and makes full-functioned web based products, this sort of RDP functionality will be well used.

tunafishman I use team viewer and it is okay for web -> linux. The web interface has graphic glitches on the mouse but works fine. For business use it costs $750+.

The other known option is thinvnc. The only problem with this (and it is a big problem) is you have to go to a windows machine or a wine install and then remote desktop into the linux machine with your choice of software. The result is the graphics are all tweaky. It is actually pretty slick as just a remote in and do xterms.

ThinVNC works well for RDP into Windows clients, but not well for Ubuntu under Wine.

Chrome OS supports SSH in the crosh shell, and I think I saw a VNC app in the market place but it didn't get very good reviews.

Well, if you are trying to use Chrome OS as an RDP client, see this: Under the Spreading Chestnut Tree: Vim, rdesktop, external monitors, and X Forwarding on a Google CR-48
