    iPhone Personal Hotspot?

    I'm really hoping ATT allows personal hotspot use in iOS 4.3

    Ref: iOS 4.3, Personal Hotspot, and iPad 2 Introduction Within Next Ten Days? - Mac Rumors

    Then we can take our Cr-48's anywhere and not have to pay Verizon wireless fees!

    Who's we? You should just have a rooted Android running Cognition with Mobile AP and Tethering built in. Then you can go anywhere and be more seemslessly integrated into your Google account.......

    We: The people that have iPhones and Cr-48's.

    There are more iOS users than Android OS (for now). So it's an important point.

    I'm pretty sure that 4.3 will allow tethering. I remember reading it somewhere but I can't find the link right now.

    EDIT: according to this link it does work on jailbroken AT&T phones with 4.3

    It depends on how they implement the tethering. Right now I have a JB'd iPhone with the MyWi application, which creates an ad-hoc WiFi network. Problem is, the Cr-48 can't connect to ad-hoc networks--only infrastructure ones. If Apple's personal hotspot app/solution creates an ad-hoc network, I think the Cr-48 is still out of luck. But if it creates an infrastructure network, that'd work fine I think.

    ::fingers crossed for infrastructure mode::

    There's a difference. Tethering is already allowed by ATT, but you have to pay for the privilege of connecting a wire from the phone to you laptop (or whichever). A hotspot makes the iPhone a glorified WiFi antenna, and is "free". I'm assuming the hotspot will have less bandwidth than physical tethering, but I'm not sure.

    No, the hotspot is not free. You have to pay for tethering just like you do for a wired connection. At least that's the way it is with VZW devices, I'm sure it's the same for AT&T.
