I believe many will agree that applications is a good thing. It extends the functionality of the device. There's actually an application in my tablet that allows me to print wireless through my network printer without a computer. Can Chromebook do that? And most of the "Apps" in the Chrome app store are just links to websites that I already have in my bookmark. One thing I do agree with you is the synchronization of Google Chrome. I have been using Google Chrome since it first came out. It's my default web browser for all my computers, and I even use it as a portable app in my flash drive so I could use it at work and at school. Like you said, with Google Chrome you could have 99.9% of the experience on any traditional computers. So why would you choose a Chromebook over any traditional laptop? It's certainly not for the price or portability
