Welcome to the Google Network. Mobile, Fast, and Free.
I know that 802.11s is still a draft proposal right now, but there are projects out there using this principal in a BIG Way. Take One Laptop Per Child. This organization has used mesh networking to bring computers to very rual communities, some who can only receive satilite internet. By providing the school internet access, and using the student's OLPC machines to hop back to the school to connect, these kids have access the internet miles from the school, and can video chat lond distances.
Let's use this to fix a problem closer to home. Fast internet access everywhere. Here is what would be really cool for google to do. What if every CR-48 or netbook had a small wireless mesh node built in.
This node would:
1) Allow peers' to share host internet connection
a) Act as an internet proxy if enabled
(peer can not access your system, just share internet)
b) user can enable \ disable internet connection
c) Host can use mesh network without sharing internet connection
3) Allow only a finite number of peer connections (to keep system demand down)
4) Allow peers' to hop to other peers' ( A hops to B to hop to C to reach D )
5) use TTL so there is a limit to the number of hops one could make.
Lets pretend that this was setup used a modified 802.11N wifi card built into the CR-48. The range would be arround 300 feet with a speed of upto 300 Mbs. That does not sound far, but if one could use it to hop along the maximum number of hops (say TTL 254) then that's over 14.4 miles! so one could in sky with another person 14 miles away without even having internet. This is using the wireless card built into the CR-48. That would be amazing wouldn't it?
This would be payed for by customers, because this would be using built-in hardware, so the cost of this fast network is already paid for.
