Ubuntu on CR-48 = Slow speed test?

I noticed when I was transferring items over the network that my speeds were very slow, averaging about 700kb/s on a wireless G LAN. I decided to try out speedtest.net against the CR-48 (running Ubuntu 11.04) and my desktop which is currently wired on a 100mb line.

My desktop:
Ping - 74
Download - 22.32 mbps
Upload - 4.10 mbps

CR-48:
Ping 83
Download - 1.1 mbps
Upload 3.8 mbps

Uh... Why is my download so incredibly poor?

EDIT - I forgot about the WPA bug from a while back. I just disabled WPA2 security and bam - 85 ping, 21.56 mbps down, 3.85 mbps up.

The bummer is, WPA (TKIP) and WPA2 (AES) both do the same thing. I sort of. well. want WPA something security... Is there a fix for this??

Also - is the wireless card in the CR-48 removable?

Roasted can you submit a bug report? Glad to see this posted as it may help many out.

I don't have ChromeOS on it, and without it I'm unsure where to post at. I of course Googled it but I'm getting a lot of already existent bugs and just want to make sure I post it in the right place. Where would you recommend?

PS - Do you know if the wireless card is easily removable? I might try to swap it out later if it's the same form factor card as my other laptop, just to try another brand and see what happens...

Well, I did some extra homework just now on my work network and noticed a pattern. I also caught myself making a mistake earlier on. My Dell Latitude laptop dual boots 10.10 and 11.04. I do this because I never fully upgrade until I have tested it on another partition and it works. At the time of comparisons earlier on, I was in 10.10 and my CR-48 was in 11.04. So right there I was testing in a mixed environment.

I booted my Dell to 11.04 and I did several speed tests. I did 5 speed tests on each laptop with each wireless card. So I did 10 total on the CR-48 (5 Intel Wifi Link 1000, 5 Atheros AR928X) and the same for the Dell Latitude. The results I got indicated it may be more of an Ubuntu 11.04 bug and not a CR-48 bug, seeing as though my results in 10.10 were fine yet in 11.04 I had issues with the Atheros on both systems. Here are my results:
Wireless Card Ping Download Upload
CR-48
Atheros AR928X 40 5.72 1.37
Atheros AR928X 40 4.55 16.45
Atheros AR928X 37 2.03 0.39
Atheros AR928X 36 1.94 15.95
Atheros AR928X 51 3.22 15.34

Dell E5500
Atheros AR928X 55 12.08 5.1
Atheros AR928X 54 2.46 3.77
Atheros AR928X 54 14.57 4.83
Atheros AR928X 54 1.97 3.43
Atheros AR928X 56 3.05 4.06

CR-48
Intel WiFi Link 1000 38 15.6 15.37
Intel WiFi Link 1000 38 14.57 15.04
Intel WiFi Link 1000 37 19.29 13.8
Intel WiFi Link 1000 36 22.45 14.73
Intel WiFi Link 1000 38 17.74 14.81

Dell E5500
Intel WiFi Link 1000 51 15.57 4.53
Intel WiFi Link 1000 53 16.06 5.02
Intel WiFi Link 1000 54 19.18 3.2
Intel WiFi Link 1000 54 16.37 4.8
Intel WiFi Link 1000 53 18.67 4.49
It seems evident with 11.04 that the Atheros gave me poorer speeds and less predictable results, whereas the Intel gave me pretty standard results each time, ranging from 14.57 as the lowest to 22.45 as the highest. Compare this to the Atheros where I had a range of 1.94 to 14.57, which seems much more drastic to me.

I'm going to file a bug with Ubuntu. I'm also ordering an Intel WiFi Link 1000 B/G/N card for this laptop, as Intel seems to be the best when it comes to hardware support and drivers... at least in my experience.

Does anybody else have an alternative OS installed? If so, what are your findings?

I'm having quite the opposite results. I've found that transferring files was painfully slow with Ubuntu (10.10 and 11.04), however, when I run Speed Test, I get great results. I then tried running Speed Test while I was transferring, and my transfer speeds increased dramatically...

Checked for sanity, and it happens every time - transfer speeds greatly increase while performing Speed Test...

Which card in particular are you running? Have you tried disabling security on your network and seeing what the results are?

My speed test when transferring files didn't matter. I noticed slowness with buffering videos, and that's what originally got me curious. Then when I hit speedtest.net and saw the differences it was obvious there was a problem somewhere.
