I want to buy a ChromeOS Desktop System

I want to buy a ChromeOS Desktop System. It must be very fast and very small. I plan to attach a 24 inch monitor and a full size keyboard and mouse. I need the security of ChromeOS because I do a lot of online banking, stock trading and shopping. I have an Android Cell Phone and plan to buy an Android "Pad". I also have a Core i7 desktop running Win7, I will use it off-line for photo and video editing, software development etc. I will only put it online to do software updates.

Seems to me it might be premature to build a system.

Chrome OS is looking really good, so far, but one thing we've learned is that security can't be claimed. It must be proven. Once Chrome OS has been out in the world being hammered on by the bad guys for a couple years, then we can probably say how secure it is.

If it were me, I think for a desktop I'd build a system to run Mint Debian, and use Chrome as the browser.

Surprisingly, Chrome isn't all that secure a browser yet. It leaks 3rd party cookies like a sieve.

I'd wait and see how things shake out. Just my $0.02...

3rd party cookies as in not over SSL? No big surprise.

I have been testing Chromium OS builds on desktop and if you have the right parts it works fine. NVidia cards don't seem to work but Intel ones work well for the most part. There is a compatibility list somewhere. Boots much quicker than the Chrome netbook but of course this is with Sandforce-based SSD and such.

Google is in the enviable position Apple is. They know their software will work on their hardware. If anybody wants to play with other hardware, they're on their own. Nothing wrong with that model, it seems to me. A compatibility list will probably be forthcoming shortly, although one never knows when a software change might render it inaccurate.

It would be nice to able to install drivers to the kernel like you can on any other linux distro. I think you can in Chromium but not Chrome. I believe Chrome is going to be tied to certain pieces of hardware (as mentioned above, like Apple).

Actually, to add to my post above, I think we will be hard-pressed to see a Chrome OS desktop solution (I could be wrong of course.) The nature of the OS makes it well suited for net books. With that said, you could easily attached a monitor, a usb hub and plug into that a usb mouse and usb keyboard.

Anyways, I look forward to seeing what will be released next year as far as Chrome devices go.

I'm sort of tempted to try installing Chrome on some older systems I have laying around. Right now, though, they are already hard pressed to work properly without adding a beta OS to them, so I'm not going to. Perhaps if I get them to be stable, we can talk about it again.

    Two things.

    1) Do not put ChromeOS on a desktop... that's silly.

    2) In response to whoever said ChromeOS's security has to be proven... it already has been.

Chrome browser is the safest browser. That's pretty easy to see... it's been the case since Chrome came out.

Linux is the safest OS. Again, easy to see and it's been the case for years.

What's ChromeOS again? Oh right, it's linux + Chrome browser.
