Is your Cr-48 on Chrome OS 0.9.130.14?
I have the same problem. The onboard speakers were working fine when I first received the laptop (almost a week ago). Suddenly yesterday they stopped working. Like the OP said, headphones work fine, just nothing out of the computer speaker.
So far the only troubleshooting I've tried is to switch to the developer channel (still in the user MODE though) and update the OS. Currently running Chrome 10.0.648.49. Did this because I understand it has fixed the hissing/crackling audio issue. No changes though. I fear it's a hardware issue but figured I'd check here to see if there were any recommendations. Honestly though, if it is the speaker itself, it's not a huge loss to me as I usually use headphones anyway.
OP Here. Went back and forth with a google ninja, they told me that it probably was hardware and gave me a link on how to crack it open. I opened it up, unplugged most of the reseatable ribbon cables and speaker cables, cleaned the contacts, and put it back together. Boom. Working speakers.

Ignore her link to zdnet, it's rotted, apparently. Opening it up is rediculously easy. Somthing tells me just like the dev switch, google designed it that way.
Awesome...thanks! I tried reseating the connector between the speakers and the motherboard, nothing. Next I reseated the ribbon cable between the I/O board and the motherboard...that did the trick! A word of caution to anyone else who tries this, they use a ZIF connector on both ends of that ribbon. If you aren't familiar with these, be sure to do a youtube search to see how to work a ZIF connector. It's easy but if you've never done it you're liable to break it trying to remove the ribbon.
My speakers work, but even with the volume turned all the way up the volume is still nto suitable for a final release product.
The Doc...
Maybe your unit is defective? I was watching a movie on YouTube just fine, from the other side of my office.
